Configuration Recommendations
for videos to be embedded
from streaming platforms
NOTICE! This recommendation guide may become outdated at any time if Vimeo or YouTube changes their commercial and/or security policies.

DISCLAIMER: Online screening at the KFFSS does not pose any problems for distribution. Viewing films at the KFFSS requires prior registration. If you still have any questions, you can see the list of the main Spanish distributors who collaborate with the KFFSS by sending us their representatives' films in the banner below.

1.- WHY DO WE PREFER VIMEO?

As you know, the Kursaal Film Festival San Sebastián (KFFSS) functions as a film showcase, featuring films previously uploaded to streaming platforms, with restricted access for viewers who must register with KFFSS. This helps us promote filmmakers' talent without the time and space limitations of in-person festivals.

At KFFSS, we don't download the films; instead, we request the URL and embed the film on our web platform so it can only be viewed from within KFFSS, thus protecting privacy. However, to achieve this, we need the collaboration of filmmakers who must have their internal settings correctly configured within Vimeo. This isn't possible with YouTube.

Vimeo and YouTube offer free options that don't guarantee privacy.

2/.- HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FILM'S PRIVACY?

With Vimeo, you only have a paid plan. You have these options within your movie settings:

a.- Left menu: APPEARANCE > CONTROLS > Disable display of the Vimeo logo. Since it's embedded, simply removing this option will prevent access to tools like "Download".

b.- SHARE button in the upper right corner

b1.- PRIVACY section: Select PASSWORD PROTECTION (with a paid plan). Without a paid plan, only PUBLIC access is available. The EMBEDD-ONLY option should be discarded, as it does not protect the privacy of the URL and only allows it to be viewed within Vimeo.

b2.- EMBEDD </> section: Within this section, the Embed option asks, "Where can I embed it?" Here you must select one of these two options: "Anywhere" or "Specific Domains" (ours would be www.kursaalffss.com).

b3.- In August 2026, Vimeo will implement a new folder-level privacy layer. To avoid problems, you must verify that the privacy settings at the folder and movie levels are not contradictory.

b4. Viewer PERMISSIONS section: Consider disabling DOWNLOADS.

With YouTube, even if you set the privacy mode to "HIDDEN," URL privacy cannot be guaranteed. A few years ago, YouTube changed its strategy and made the "WATCH FROM YOUTUBE" option permanent. Therefore, if a viewer accesses the video from YouTube, it will bypass KFFSS's embed protection and they will have access to the movie's URL, even if it's set to hidden mode.

FINAL PRIVACY NOTICE! You must understand that if you use Vimeo or YouTube with incorrect settings or without the privacy limitations we have informed you about, it will be at your own risk.

3/.- HOW TO CONFIGURE YOUR MOVIE FOR EMBEDDING?

With Vimeo, you need to configure each movie correctly.

From the SHARE button at the top > EMBEDD section </>: Within this Embed section, you'll be asked "Where can I embed it?". Here, you need to select one of these two options: "Anywhere" or "Specific domains" (ours would be www.kursaalffss.com).

With YouTube, you don't need to do anything.
